Oak’s Healthy Eating Tips for Patio Season: Enjoy the food and company without compromising your wellness journey!

The weather is warming up in Thunder Bay and patio season is approaching! We are all looking forward to enjoying our favourite local restaurants while soaking in the sun and savouring our delicious meals with friends and family. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of outdoor dining (especially when we only have a couple months of it here!) so it is important to find the balance between indulging and eating healthy.

Here are some tips to help you enjoy that patio season while ensuring you are also prioritizing your health!





  1. Opt for fresh: It is not difficult in Thunder Bay to find a restaurant that serves fresh (and sometimes local) options for produce during the warmer months. Load up your plate with colourful salads and vegetables that are sure to have a delicious flavour and are also high in nutrients!

  2. Choose lean protein options: Choose lean protein sources like grilled chicken, fish, tofu, or legumes. These protein options are lower in saturated fat and can help keep you feeling full and satisfied!

  3. Watch your portion size: Many restaurants offer larger portions, making it easy to overeat. Practice mindful eating by paying attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.
